Foreclosures:
Foreclosure activity for 2009 increased in Utah over the prior year. There was a total of 27,140 properties with filings. That works out to a rate of one filing for every 34 households, which compares to the United States average of 45, and is almost three percent of the state’s housing units.

Those figures represent a 82 percent increase over 2008 and a 264 percent increase over 2007.

In 2008 there were about 30,800 existing homes (including condos, co-ops, and single-family homes but excluding new homes) sold in Utah, compared to about 41,900 sold in 2007.

Economy:
Utah is currently undergoing an economic renaissance of sorts, as it attempts a transformation from a farming- and natural resources-based economy into a modern corporate power. According to the State New Economy Index, Utah is the top state for “economic dynamism,” a reflection of its increasingly global, technology-driven economic expansion. Mining and fossil fuels are both still major industries in the state. Since Utah hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, tourism has boomed. Utah has five national parks including Zion and Bryce Canyon and hosts the Sundance Film Festival.
