Foreclosure activity for 2009 increased in Arkansas over the prior year. There was a total of 16,547 properties with filings. That works out to a rate of one filing for every 78 households, which compares to the United States average of 45, and is a little more than one percent of the state’s housing units.
Those figures represent a 16 percent increase over 2008 and a 158 percent increase over 2007.
In 2008 there were about 64,200 existing homes (including condos, co-ops, and single-family homes but excluding new homes) sold in Arkansas, compared to about 78,600 sold in 2007.
Economy:
In 2005, Little Rock was named Forbes Magazine's 22nd best city for business, and in 2009 the Brookings Institution ranked it the 7th best metropolitan economy in the United States. Arkansas (and its capital city in particular,) have been successful in luring some of the nation's largest companies like Raytheon, Siemens, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and AT&T. But the state's most famous residents are the Wal-Mart corporation (headquartered in Bentonville,) and Tyson Foods (based in Springdale).
Noteworthy: In 2004, the $165 million William J. Clinton Presidential Center was dedicated in Little Rock. Clinton isn't the only famous Arkansan though, Johnny Cash and Douglas MacArthur also hail from the state.
